Our Organization
In 1986 the chaplains program was started for police by Rick Ottman, Chief of the Huntsville Police Department. In October, 2004 the Huntsville Police Chaplains Program was incorporated with the State of Alabama and became known as Public Safety Chaplaincy. The name of the organization was changed to promote growth and inclusiveness of all Public Safety Agencies in Huntsville and Madison County.
Our Services
Public Safety Chaplains (PSC) are involved in a wide variety of situations. Situations that include fatal accidents, suicides, homicides, SIDS deaths, hostage incidents, and search/rescue. Following traumatic incidents, PSC's offer and conduct stress counseling to law enforcement personnel both sworn and non-sworn and their families. Counseling may also include pre-marital, career-related, retirement, and other topics as the need may arise. PSC's also perform weddings, funerals, baptisms as requested, and make hospital and home visits as needed. Ride-alongs with the different public safety agencies the PSC's serve are an important opportunity for PSC's to develop rapport and be available for informal counseling and support. PSC's are scheduled so that they are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and respond on a no-decline basis.
